KeNeHeMo Carnival (Kelmis, Neu-Moresnet, Hergenrath, Moresnet) is a local carnival season spanning November to February. It begins with the Küschespektakel on 11 Nov and continues with weekly costume parties, culminating in a vibrant Rosenmontag parade in Kelmis (La Calamine). Thousands of locals participate, with more than 100 folk groups, floats and bands filling the streets 1 2. The festival is famous for its colorful floats, traditional Rhenish carnival music, and community-made costumes, reflecting the identity of Kelmis residents.
KeNeHeMo brings together several neighboring parishes into one carnival community. Its traditions (dating back to 1868) include crowning a Carnival Prince each season 1. During carnival season, local clubs produce elaborate floats and prepare shows (Kapellensitzungen). The festival is deeply embedded in Kelmis culture: on 11 November the city holds the 'Küschespektakel' pig spectacle, symbolically opening the carnival 2, and on the mornings of the final days people dress to visit nursing homes and the Clown statue in homage to the town’s carnival heritage 3.
