The Ommegang is an annual historical pageant held on the Grand-Place in early July. Around 1,400 participants in Renaissance costume, plus horses and giants, reenact Emperor Charles V’s 1549 entry into the city 1 2. The week-long festival also includes a Renaissance fair (village) on the Sablon and choreographed performances at night. It is both a living history spectacle and a celebration of Brussels folklore.
Originally a medieval religious procession (1348) honoring Notre-Dame du Sablon, the Ommegang was revived in 1930 to showcase Brussels’ heritage 1. It has evolved into a grand annual festival that involves local guilds and folklore societies. Each summer, neighborhood groups prepare for months to participate, making it a focal point of Brussels’ historical identity and community tradition 1 2.
