Vienna FestivalWiener Festwochen

A six-week spring cultural festival (May–June) featuring international theatre, opera, music and dance. Established in 1951, the Wiener Festwochen welcome avant-garde and classical performances from around the world at venues across the city 1 2. It traditionally opens with a free outdoor celebration at Rathausplatz and draws major local and visiting audiences.

The Festwochen position Vienna as a global arts capital. It blends Viennese cultural legacy (operatic and theatrical arts) with contemporary multicultural programs. Out of all Austrian festivals, it encapsulates Vienna’s intellectual and artistic identity, involving local institutions like the Burgtheater and Secession.
