In Mondsee, an annual Perchtenlauf is held on the evening of Nov 30 as part of the Mondsee Advent market 1. Six groups (150 participants) in handcrafted wooden masks parade through the old town center 2. The tradition was started over 20 years ago by the local sports club to replace a Krampus run on Dec 5 2. The Perchten are Alpine wild spirits, and in Mondsee the procession is a highlight of local Christmas festivities. Visitors witness a loud, fiery folk ritual with bells, horns, and costumes that reflect the region’s pagan and Christian heritage 2.
The Perchtenlauf in Mondsee blends older Alpine pagan customs with Christian Advent celebrations. The Perchten figures (docs of winter) parade to drive out evil spirits, while St. Nicholas and angels bring gifts for children, merging two traditions 1 2.
