The Gasteiner Perchtenlauf in Bad Hofgastein is a quadrennial winter procession where over 150 costumed figures (Perchten) parade through the Gastein Valley to chase away evil spirits and celebrate the coming light. It features fearsome masks, heavy wooden bells, and the traditional Kappentanz (cap dance) at the end. Listed as Austria’s intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO 1 2, it is one of the oldest Alpine customs (documented since the 14th century) and a key identity symbol of the Gastein community.
The Perchtenlauf stems from pre-Christian Alpine traditions (rooted in winter-solstice rites and ancient Germanic fertility cults). Perchten are often seen as the older counterparts to Krampus. In local folklore, Perchten (named after the goddess Perchta) roam the ``Raunächte'' (twelve holy nights) to cleanse the community of winter demons and bring luck. The modern parade continues this ritualistic heritage, passed orally through generations and organized by the Gasteiner Perchtenverein 1 2.
