Sultan Nevruz (March 22) is an annual Bektashi celebration in Albania marking the advent of spring and Imam Ali’s birthday 1 2. Declared a public holiday in 1996, it is observed with communal prayers, music, poetry, and symbolic bonfires at Bektashi tekkes 3 4. Thousands of Albanian believers (as well as members of other faiths in an ecumenical spirit) gather at the Bektashi World Headquarters in Tirana and at regional tekes to pray and share ritual foods 5 6. The celebration emphasizes renewal, peace and unity across communities 7.
The Bektashi are a liberal Sufi order influential in Albania; they blend Shi'a and Hanafi Sunni elements and incorporate pre-Islamic Albanian traditions 1. Sultan Nevruz originates from ancient Persian New Year (“New Day”) rites and is identified with the birth of Imam Ali (22 March 600s CE). Bektashis have observed it in Albania since the 14th century 2, celebrating the revival of nature and life each year at this date. The festival also fosters solidarity: believers exchange gifts, distribute blessed milk and sherbet, and offer prayers for the poor, orphans, soldiers, and leaders 3 4.

Approximately one hour of prayers and ceremonial candle-lighting by attendees.
Stand quietly at the back; men and women stand separately. Participate by lighting a candle; it's a moving, prayerful moment.

Assistants distribute small gifts or sweets; observe the prayers, and clasp hands as a sign of solidarity.
Sit on provided cushions; enjoy traditional music. Applaud after performances. Remain for final prayers around dusk.
