The Skampa International Theatre Festival, held annually each October, is one of Albania’s oldest and largest theatre events, centered at Teatri Skampa in Elbasan. It showcases international and Albanian drama troupes with cutting-edge contemporary theatre. Each year (the 2025 edition was the 27th), the festival’s program includes 10–12 performances from countries like Greece, Turkey, Serbia, Kosovo and others, as well as Albanian premieres. The festival often features avant-garde works and experimental plays, under themes like “Extension/Zgjerim”. Beyond performances, it offers workshops, exhibitions, and discussions that engage local theatre professionals and the community. It transforms Elbasan into an active drama hub for a week, reflecting the city’s identity as a lifelong center of performing arts and reinforcing modern Albanian theatre tradition 1 2.

Skampa Festival was founded in 1999 and has grown as Albania’s pioneer international theatre gathering.
