The Festa de la Transhumància celebrates the ancient practice of moving livestock to mountain pastures. In Sant Julià de Lòria it involves a two-day event in late June where shepherds lead flocks on traditional routes. In 2025, a transhumance of cows and horses occurred from Roca de Pimes to Port Negre 1. The previous year’s edition (Oct 2024) included sheep procession from Naturland ski slopes down to Conangle 2 and complementary local fairs with artisanal products and dog-herding demonstrations. The festival is an embodiment of rural identity; attendees see up to 100 animals paraded through town, complete with band playing folk tunes 3 4. It begins with the blessing of animals at dawn and ends with communal meals. For visitors, this is a rare view of pastoral tradition in action, with opportunities to meet shepherds and purchase local cheeses or meat. Cultural significance is high as transhumance is UNESCO-protected heritage.
Transhumance is central to the high mountain cultures of Andorra; this festival revives a once-critical economic process. It educates the public about local alpine agriculture, tying in festivals of local products and folk music (esbart dances on the celestial pass).
